Prayers & Poetry

A Thanksgiving Prayer

Eternal God, we give you thanks that through the years,
through the generations, through the changing seasons,
you have been with humanity in the good, the bad and the ugly times.
We give you thanks that your truth is
unchanging, steadfast and reliable, upholding and supportive.
We give you thanks that you are there for us in all aspects of our lives
from the moment of our birth
to the drawing of our last breath and beyond.
We give you thanks that even when we seek things
and possessions more than we ought, that still you stand beside us,
walk with us, breathe with us, live within us.
We give you thanks that you are the framework,
the scaffold of our lives.
To you be all praise and glory.
Amen

The Serenity Prayer, written by Reinhold Niebuhr.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. The courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

A Winter Prayer

The days are short,
but you, Lord, fill them with meaning.
The days are cold,
but you, Lord, send the fire of your Spirit
to warm our hearts with love.
The earth sleeps,
but you, Lord, neither slumber nor sleep.
As a mother tenderly watches over her children,
you watch over us
through all of our dark days.
As we come before you now
we offer you thanks and praise
for your faithful love.
Amen.
